With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there’s no better way to start planning a romantic day than with candles. Add a personal touch to it by crafting it yourself. Here are four easy DIY Candle ideas that are easy on the pocket and can be crafted in less than an hour.
For the first design all you need is-
- A white candle ( preferably Pillar candles or tea light candles)
- Acrylic paints
- Confetti, glitter or heart shaped cut outs
- Glue
- Tweezers
Start by pasting the confetti/heart shaped cut outs on the side of the candle, you can paste in a pattern or haphazardly. Keep in mind that they need to be pasted completely, or the paint will peel off later.
Paint the sides of the candle with the acrylic paint. Dip a toothbrush in the acrylic paint and spray the paint on the sides of the candle. Spray it all over or just on the confetti/hearts.
Finally use a pair of tweezers to peel off the cut outs.
For the next design and this one is the simplest, you’ll need-
- Tea light candles/Votive Candles
- Clear glass bowl
- Gold ribbon
- Glue
- Heart shaped confetti/glitter
Place or paste the ribbon in the top/middle/bottom of the bowl, you can place one thick strip or place three thin strips on the top, middle and the bottom of the bowl. If you’re making more than one candle, make sure that you place them in the same place for all of them or you could have a combination of all three (Top, middle and bottom), but it’s better if you maintain consistency in the designs.
Finally paste the heart shaped confetti at odd angles on the ribbon. Other designs like these work wonders as well
You can also keep it real simple by just placing a few votive candles in small glass jars and painting the outside with acrylic colours, like this.
If you don’t like what’s out there you can also craft a Jar Candles yourself. For this final design, all you need is-
- A Mason jar (preferred), you can use any other glass jar as well.
- Glue
- Pre-waxed wicks
- Pencil/Pen to hold the wick in place
- Paint brush or cloth
- Glitter/Colourful sprinkles
- 400 gms of wax, you don’t need to buy this you can always recycle old candles
- Scented wax cubes if you want to bring out a fragrance when the candle is lit
- Corn syrup
Use the wick to attach the wick to the bottom of the jar with the glue. Mix water and corn syrup in a separate bowl and coat the inside of the glass jar with the mixture. Use a paint brush to coat the bottom of the glass jar.
Hold the glass jar horizontally and add a spoonful of sprinkles or glitter, roll the jar around to get an even coat on the insides of the jar.
Place the pencil/pen on the top of the jars, tape the wicks to the pencil/pen to keep the wicks centered, like this.
Use a double boiler (if you don’t have one, use a pot and a heat proof bowl-fill the pot half full with water and bring it to a simmer, them place a metal bowl on top). Melt the wax with about 3-4 Scented Wax Melts.
Pour the wax directly to the center of the jar away from the sides. Freeze the jar for about 3-4 hours till the candle has set.
